Obituary

Sister Peggy Torrence Hurst was born August 21,1931 in Liberty, Mississippi.  She was born the fifth child to her late parents Andrew Torrence, Sr. and Mary Jackson Torrence Rogers.  She went out to be with the Lord on Friday, February 19, 2016 at Baton Rouge Healthcare located in Baker, Louisiana.

Sister Peggy was baptized at an early age at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Liberty, Mississippi by Rev. Walter Martin, Sr.  Sister Peggy served on the Usher Board for sixteen years.

Sister Peggy graduated from St. Helena High School.  She was married to Huey P. Hurst on July 17, 1952 for 25 years until his death.

Sister Peggy decided in later years to move her church membership to Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Scotlandville, and served under the leadership of Pastor George C. Pierce.  While at Mt. Zion she served on the Culinary Kitchen Staff, Pastor's Aide Club, and the Sunday School Ministry.  She also enjoyed listening to the various choirs.

Sister Peggy worked 25 years at McCory's Discount Store, downtown on 3rd Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  After leaving McCory's she found employment at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a cook until she retired.

Sister Peggy leaves to cherish her memory; three brothers, David Torrence of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Henry B. Rogers of Houston, TX; Jimmy Rogers (Julie) Norwood, Louisiana; two sisters, Ruby T. Morrow of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Brenda R. Davis of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, an Aunt, Ora Lee Glover of Marerro, Louisiana; one sister-in-law, Katherine Hurst of New Orleans, Louisiana, two god-daughters, Courtney Tramaine Murphy and Vinell Morrow Singleton both of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Sister Peggy was preceded in death by her husband; Huey P. Hurst, her parents; Andrew Torrence, Sr. and Mary Jackson Torrence Rogers; a stepfather, James Rogers; 5 brother; Andrew Torrence, J. B. Rogers, Earl Rogers, Mathis James Rogers, and Tommy Rogers; 8 sisters, Zannie T. Dunn, Rose Lee T. Chester, Ruthie T. Jackson, Edna T. Welsh, Edis T. Coleman, Betty Torrence, Mary Lee Rogers, Ella Rogers; and two nieces and two nephews.
